blank faceplates=not breaking electrical code?

I was reading one of my fav. blogs, Young House Love, after finishing my work this morning and finally figured out the reason for the mysterious blank electrical faceplates in our sunroom (see above, the white faceplate between our three Vermont prints.)

For reasons that should have been obvious to me earlier (as an avid watcher of Holmes on Homes), it's probably against code to cover up live electrical outlets with drywall.  An inexpensive solution was to cover the outlet with a faceplate (instead of calling out an electrician.)  I bet there was an exterior light here back in the day.  There used to be a door from the garage, from what we can tell, and this light is right beside the former opening.

Another house mystery solved! (Check out our mysterious holes and sweet mystery on the magnolia tree in the backyard)

  1. I use them also to hide cable and phone lines (we don't use either). This way anybody who comes in after us doesn't have to re-run anything (and I don't have unsightly connectors everywhere)
